Amid the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War, German composer Heinrich Schütz
published two collections of Kleine Geistliche Konzerte: short pieces on sacred texts for a
small group of singers with continuo accompaniment. Composed in lean times for reduced forces,
these works nonetheless offer a rich variety of expressive text setting and stylish vocal
writing to delight performers and concertgoers alike.
